Outfit inspiration, things I loved and saved, and working towards a wishlist that is very intentional
My wishlist, until recently, resembled a long list of bullet points containing items that I was attracted to on a daily basis. Working in fashion eCom is something I absolutely love, but it has its downsides, because I start craving things I shouldn't. As in, a lot of black tops, cargo pants, tons of jeans, shoes, bags, belts, loafers!! etc. It can get to be a lot, and I am unsure at what point in time I started doing these lists and came to believe I need most items there. Like a diet, the cravings can throw me off track faster than I can blink, and I needed to sort through this ever growing list. While sorting, I couldn’t remember half of what was there, and I kept clicking the links and instead of narrowing this wishlist idea, it was becoming longer. So I deleted everything. Start from scratch. By “scratch” I mean start looking at what’s in my wardrobe and only add to the wishlist an item that is special to me in some way (like a Celine by Hedi Slimane jacket, let’s say) or something that is truly missing and there’s a gap in some category, or replace something I donated/sold. This is, for most, the way it is done. I have come to confuse it with never-ending desire for beautiful garments. We all know we can love something and appreciate it without adding it to our wardrobe. I am now starting to learn that there’s more power in restraint than in an overwhelming amount of items. We become more creative in the way we construct an outfit instead of having it all within reach. It’s also a tad boring, no?
I believe that in the time of social media and heavy exposure to everything, we have come to confuse things a bit. At least I have. I used to think of items in my wardrobe just as that - items in my wardrobe, coherent to one another, and getting dressed was just something I did every morning, without having to plan anything. This planning of outfits became a thing for me when I had a job that was so intense I barely had time for anything in the morning, so every Sunday I started making a PowerPoint (yup, it was a thing back in 2013) with what I would wear every day for the week ahead. Because I would google the items I had in my wardrobe to get an image (as opposed to taking a picture of the garment and then uploading on my laptop) I would end up seeing other items - similar, newer, better somehow because they weren’t mine. And I think from there, plus changing jobs, things took a turn for the never-ending cravings.
It is just in the last week that I started getting this fatigue with everything. Overexposure to things, the happenings of the world, work stuff, etc., that I decided to simplify things. From the way I show up on instagram (which was never my favorite, but I love the friendships I made via the platform) to the way I shop, to the way I look at my wardrobe, everything just shifted.
My wishlist now has three things on it, and they are actually things I need. And aside from that, I started looking for inspiration outside instagram, where someone is always trying to sell us something, and I loved it. I became even more creative in the way I build my outfits now - will talk about it more this weekend and even more in detail soon.
Meanwhile, I took these screenshots via this YouTube video, and while watching it, it made me realize how I am drawn to timeless looks, and also with Korean fashion.
I’m drawn to all of these looks, and more, and it’s nothing mind-blowing other than super good items styled really well. Chic, timeless yet modern. Easy. Love absolutely everything and I am sure we all similar items in our wardrobes and can use our imagination to wear them in a similar way.
